Is My Baby Latching Correctly?

Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful way to nourish your baby, but it can also come with its challenges. One of the most common concerns for new mothers is ensuring their baby is latching correctly. At Tourmaline Collective, San Diego’s luxury premier natural birth center, we understand the importance of a proper latch for both mother and baby. In this article, we’ll explore how to determine if your baby is latching correctly, tips for achieving a good latch, and when to seek help.

Signs of a Correct Latch

1: Comfort for the Mother:

  • A proper latch should not cause pain. While some initial tenderness is normal, ongoing pain is a sign of an incorrect latch. Breastfeeding should be a comfortable experience once the latch is established.

2: Effective Milk Transfer:

  • You should be able to see and hear your baby swallowing during feeding. This indicates that they are effectively extracting milk. Your baby’s cheeks should be rounded, not dimpled, during sucking.

3: Visible Areola:

  • More of the areola (the darker area around the nipple) should be visible above your baby’s upper lip than below the lower lip. This means your baby has a deep latch, which is crucial for effective breastfeeding.

4: Adequate Wet Diapers:

  • Your baby should have at least six wet diapers a day and regular bowel movements. This is a clear indicator that they are receiving enough milk.

5: Content Baby:

  • A well-fed baby will generally release the breast on their own and appear content and satisfied after feeding.

Tips for Achieving a Good Latch

1: Positioning:

  • Proper positioning is key. Hold your baby close to you, with their body facing yours. Their nose should be level with your nipple. Common positions include the cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, football hold, and side-lying position.

2: Rooting Reflex:

  • Gently stroke your baby’s cheek near their mouth. This should trigger the rooting reflex, causing them to turn their head toward your breast with an open mouth.

3: Nipple Alignment:

  • Aim your nipple towards the roof of your baby’s mouth. When their mouth opens wide, quickly bring them to your breast, not the other way around. Their chin should touch your breast first, followed by the lower lip making contact with your areola.

4: Support the Breast:

  • Use your hand to support your breast in a “C” shape, with your thumb on top and fingers underneath. This can help guide your nipple into your baby’s mouth.

5: Check Baby’s Lips:

  • Ensure your baby’s lips are flanged outwards, resembling a fish. Their mouth should cover a large part of the areola, not just the nipple.

Common Latch Issues and Solutions

1: Shallow Latch:

  • A shallow latch can cause nipple pain and inadequate milk transfer. To fix this, gently insert a clean finger into the corner of your baby’s mouth to break the suction and try latching again.

2: Nipple Confusion:

  • If your baby has been bottle-fed, they might have difficulty latching correctly. Spend more time skin-to-skin and offer the breast frequently to encourage a natural latch.

3: Tongue-Tie:

  • Some babies are born with a condition called tongue-tie, where the tongue’s range of motion is restricted. This can affect their ability to latch correctly. Consult with a lactation consultant or pediatrician if you suspect tongue-tie.

4: Inverted Nipples:

  • Inverted or flat nipples can make latching challenging. Using nipple shields or expressing some milk before feeding can help draw out the nipple.
