Labor is an incredible journey that brings you closer to holding your baby for the first time. As a mother-centered midwifery center, we understand how empowering and transformative this process can be. To help you prepare, we’ve outlined the stages of labor and what to expect in each one. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, knowledge can provide comfort and reassurance as you embark on this beautiful experience.
The Three Stages of Labor
Labor is divided into three main stages, each with its unique physical and emotional challenges:
- The First Stage: Early, Active, and Transition Phases
- The Second Stage: Pushing and Birth
- The Third Stage: Delivery of the Placenta
Let’s break these down to give you a clear understanding of what to expect during each stage.
Stage 1: Early, Active, and Transition Phases
The first stage of labor is the longest and is further divided into three phases:
Early Labor
This is when your body begins preparing for active labor. You’ll notice:
- Mild, irregular contractions that gradually become more regular.
- A “bloody show” or the loss of your mucus plug.
- Cervical dilation of up to 3-4 cm.
Expect this phase to last anywhere from a few hours to several days, especially if it’s your first baby. The key during early labor is to stay relaxed. You can spend this time at home, practicing breathing exercises, taking a warm bath, or even going for a gentle walk.
Active Labor
Active labor typically lasts 4-8 hours and is marked by:
- Stronger, more consistent contractions occurring every 3-5 minutes.
- Cervical dilation from 4 cm to about 7 cm.
This is when many women head to their chosen birth center or hospital. At Tourmaline Birth Center, this is the point where our experienced midwives work closely with you, offering comfort measures like massage, hydrotherapy, and emotional support.
Transition Phase
The transition phase is the most intense part of the first stage and can last 30 minutes to 2 hours. Signs include:
- Contractions occurring every 2-3 minutes and lasting up to 90 seconds.
- Full cervical dilation to 10 cm.
- Pressure on your lower back and pelvic area.
While this phase can feel overwhelming, it’s also the shortest. We’ll remind you that you’re almost ready to meet your baby and provide the compassionate care you need to stay grounded and strong.
Stage 2: Pushing and Birth
Once you’re fully dilated, it’s time to push. This stage can last from 20 minutes to a few hours, depending on factors like the baby’s position and your previous birth experiences.
What to Expect
- An overwhelming urge to push during each contraction.
- Pressure in your pelvis as your baby moves through the birth canal.
- A crowning sensation as your baby’s head becomes visible.
At Tourmaline Birth Center, we support you in choosing a birthing position that feels most natural and effective, whether it’s squatting, kneeling, or lying on your side. Your midwife will guide you through the process, offering encouragement and ensuring the safety of both you and your baby.
Stage 3: Delivery of the Placenta
The final stage of labor occurs after your baby is born. During this phase, the placenta is delivered. It usually takes 5-30 minutes and involves mild contractions.
What to Expect
- A feeling of relief after the intensity of pushing.
- A warm, joyful moment of bonding with your newborn.
- Possible assistance from your midwife to ensure the complete delivery of the placenta.
At Tourmaline Birth Center, we prioritize skin-to-skin contact and immediate breastfeeding, fostering an intimate connection between you and your baby while promoting postpartum healing.
